Perspective • WhyWatt? HEX

Map your home electrification journey. Weigh the true cost-benefit, then decide.

WhyWatt? Home Electrification eXplorer (WhyWatt? HEX) is a transparent decision engine developed through open development with community input to help California homeowners and community advocates navigate the transition from fossil gas to clean electric energy. Built with Python, Mesa agent-based modeling, and Solara, it models your household's actual energy demand—from heat pumps and induction cooktops to EV charging, rooftop solar, and home battery storage like the Tesla Powerwall—grounded in real California climate data and utility tariffs.

Rather than pushing equipment sales or arbitrary estimates, WhyWatt? HEX compares two 20-year trajectories side by side: Your Journey of phased clean upgrades versus a Do Nothing baseline where aging gas appliances are replaced like-for-like as utility rates rise. By combining NREL hourly load shapes, CPUC-calibrated rate projections, and real time-of-use pricing, WhyWatt? HEX empowers you to see exactly when and how electrification pays for itself.

Unbiased by Design: Zero affiliate links, zero contractor referral markups. Built through open development with community input—methods, data, and testing procedures are openly shared. Volunteer to get access to code and support it.
